Iraj Taraporwala was born in India of the 19th century and undertook his initial schooling in Mumbai. After obtaining a Tripos in Sanskrit from Cambridge, U.K, and a Doctorate degree from Wurzburg University, Germany, Dr. Taraporwala studies Avestan literature under Professor Christian Bartholomae. He returned to India and was assigned the chairmanship of the Department of Comparative Philology at the university of Calcutta. He produced three monumental volumes on Selections from Classical Gujarati Literature filled with devotional poetry. His translation of Gathas of Zarathushtra and his other publications on the religion of Zarathushtra are amongst the classical literatures of Zarathushtrianism.
